Providing Critical Care To Women and Infants

Woman's has two intensive care units that are equipped to provide constant monitoring for our patients.

For information about the Ebola virus, Woman's follows The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Guidelines.


Adult Intensive Care Unit

Located on the 2nd floor of the hospital, our 4-bed private room unit is specially designed and equipped to give patients the best possible care. The Adult ICU is staffed by trained critical care registered nurses,

A woman may be admitted to the unit because their doctor has determined that she has a condition that requires constant monitoring that can best be provided in an intensive care setting where nurses will continuously monitor their condition and vital signs at both the bedside and through a camera at the nurses' station.

A woman would be admitted in the Adult ICU because her doctor has determined that her condition requires constant monitoring. Patients are monitored through:

  • Continuous monitoring of heart, blood pressure, oxygen level and respiratory function at the bedside and nurse’s station
  • Camera from the nurse’s station
  • Frequent assessments by your nurse
  • Through Mobile Virtual Critical Care (MVCC)

Adult ICU Patient

During the admission process to the unit, it will take the nurses time to "settle" the patient into the room and assess her condition. Family and visitors will be asked to wait in our family waiting room. Once the initial assessment and treatment has begun, visitors will be allowed into the room and may ask questions or address any concerns with the nurses.

During an emergency situation, all visitors will be asked to leave the unit. Once the emergency is clear, visitors will be allowed to return to the bedside.

How can my family get information about me?

Every patient's fight to confidentiality must be maintained, so only one person should be designated to receive information about their loved one. Be aware that our staff cannot discuss the patient's condition by phone with anyone other than that designated person.

  • The designated spokesperson may call 225-924-8305 for information.
  • The staff will establish a confidential pass code with that person upon the patient's admission and will ask for the pass code before discussing any patient information.
  • All other calls to the unit, regarding the patient's condition, will be directed to the designated person.
  • If you are unable to select a spokesperson, the closest relative will be designated, according to state law.

Visiting Hours & Policy

Visiting Hours:

  • 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM daily.
  • Only two support persons or visitors in the patient's room at one time.
  • Around the clock, one adult support person, designated by the patient, will be allowed to stay in the room.

Visitation Policy:

  • Due to their medical conditions, patients need to remain in a calm, quiet environment.
  • Children 14 years and younger may visit during general visiting hours if they are healthy, and must be supervised by an adult other than the patient at all times.
  • For obstetrical patients, we will make every effort to allow the baby in for short visits if he is in the Well Baby Nursery and the patient's condition permits.
  • Visitors will be asked to go to the AICU family room during certain procedures, if there is an emergency, and at your request.
  • No outside food or drinks are allowed in the patient's room.
  • Visitors should wash their hands or use hand sanitizer when entering the room and often while visiting.  Hand sanitizer is located in an automatic dispenser on the wall to the left of the sink in each room.
  • Guests with coughs and colds, fever, or recent exposure to illness may not visit.
  • The nurse or physician can override general visiting guidelines based on the patient's condition and preference.


Mobile Virtual Critical Care (MVCC)

What is Mobile Virtual Critical Care (MVCC)?

  • Mobile Virtual Critical Care (MVCC) uses virtual and wireless computer technology so that an Intensive Care Physician called an Intensivist can remotely monitor you from Our Lady of the Lake Hospital. 
  • Your physician at Woman's will work together with the Intensivist at Our Lady of the Lake Hospital to provide you the highest level of care and best outcomes.

What can I expect with MVCC?

  • Intensivists and critical care RNs at Our Lady of the Lake Hospital will have remote access to your monitoring trends, labs, orders and other health care information in real time to provide up to the minute ICU care.
  • There is a video camera with a two-way audio system to allow the Our Lady of the Lake Hospital physician/nurses to see and/or talk to you, your family and healthcare providers in the room.
  • A “doorbell” will sound to let you know when the video camera is on. 
  • There is a button in your room for your nurse to press should an emergency arise which will link directly to the Our Lady of the Lake Hospital team.

How is my privacy protected with the MVCC monitoring me?

As with any medical staff providing care for you at Woman’s, the MVCC staff is bound by confidentiality laws to protect your privacy. Access to your information is limited only to those authorized by the hospital. 

Also, information is not released to anyone other than those providing your care without your written authorization. The data that is exchanged between Our Lady of the Lake Hospital and our AICU is transmitted over secure private lines and is encrypted to make it unreadable.
